The Roman orator Cicero tells of Damocles, a courtier of Dionysius who envied the tyrant’s seemingly charmed life. To teach him a lesson, Dionysius invited him to dinner and seated him on the throne. Damocles’ delight turned to terror the moment he noticed a sword hanging above his head by a single horsehair. Dionysius had made his point: a tyrant is never safe, for that sword may fall at any moment.
