The Greek historian Diodorus Siculus writes of the tyrant’s passion for poetry and the arts, and of the celebrated poets and scholars he welcomed to his court. They repaid his generosity with flattery, assuring him of the beauty of his verses.
At one banquet, however, the poet Philoxenus dared to give his honest opinion of them. Stung, Dionysius accused him of envy and had him thrown into the Latomie – into the very cave from which the tyrant was said to eavesdrop on his enemies, known ever since as the Ear of Dionysius.
