Cicero also tells us that Dionysius had a great love of horses. One day, riding near Lentini, not far from Syracuse, he found himself stuck in a bog. After struggling in vain to free his
horse, he reluctantly left it behind.
Then something extraordinary happened. The horse broke free and galloped after him, neighing, surrounded by a swarm of bees – a divine sign, according to the soothsayers. Emboldened by the omen, Dionysius soon staged the coup that made him tyrant.
