Historians record that Dionysius had little respect for the gods, plundering the temples of Syracuse as ruthlessly as those of the cities he conquered. He is said to have looted the temple of Persephone, goddess of the underworld, at Locri in Calabria; to have stripped the golden cloak from the statue of Zeus at Olympia; and to have taken the golden beard from the statue of Asclepius at Epidaurus.
